We drove out to my boyfriend's family farm this weekend to do some camping and enjoy the sunshine.
We haven't been out there since last fall and instead the of golden fields of wheat there was acre after acre of bright yellow canola growing everywhere.
Standing in the canola is like being in the biggest flower patch you can imagine. It looks like it keeps on going right until it meets the sky on the horizon. I love love love the prairies
I had baked peanut butter cookies and berry crumble bars for our visit but we still decided to go berry picking in the saskatoon berry patches.
The berries grow in the wild, un-farmed part of the land away from the canola fields. They were pretty tasty but I think I prefer them baked in desserts or in yogurt rather than on their own so we brought back some to have with yogurt for breakfast the next day.
There are a lot of crumbling buildings scattered across the property which are cool too look at but are generally un-safe to go into. This old chicken coop is different though...
With no basement or cellar there is no danger of falling through the floor...
.. plus the birds have planted an elderberry tree by leaving droppings with berry seeds inside the coop. It looked like a green house in there.
Even further behind the canola fields, saskatoon berry patch and old farm buildings is the birch tree cove and strawberry hill. We took a walk along there and it took a lot longer than expected because we had to stop every few seconds and eat the tiny wild strawberries that were growing there.
Same with the bright red currants. There were also hazelnuts growing there that we plan on picking when we go back in the fall for harvesting the apples.
It feels so good to get out of the city and just run around like kids outside. Its all the fun of having a farm without the many hours of labor and stress of farming.
We'll be back in the fall (or sooner... once our sunburns fade) since now it's even easier to camp there with a new fire pit and running water from the old well.
I'll be putting up pictures and recipes for the baked goods that we brought with us later on this week. There was a lot of good eating going on that weekend.
Beautiful shots--so beautiful. I'd love to be knee-high in some conola! Take care, Cassie

outside my house there is such an amount of ice, that I'm not going out unless the sun shines enough. Isn't that a good reason to be jealous? haha! But I'm deaming of summer now

Sounds like a great time. The pic of you standing in the canola patch reminds me of that scene in all the poppies in Wizard of Oz! Can't wait to hear about the good eats too.

Beautiful location! I would absolutely love to live out on a farm like that, well, in the summer time anyway.
One of these days I'm going to have to try saskatoon berries, they look yummy.

Very cool idea. I think I will have to try this one. I just love the "It's the Little Things" line. Thanks!

The chicken scoop now needs some renovations or rebuilding undertaken. While you said it is safer but it would really add beauty to the property if rebuilding it is taken into consideration.
