First of all, the cake itself is only a little bit bigger than a cupcake. Secondly, its topped with tiny fondant desserts. Its a mini-cake with mini-mini-cakes on it!!
Its not a grown-up sophisicated cake that you serve at fancy luncheons or black tie affairs. Its more something that you serve to large groups of squealing girls.
It's all thanks to this Japanese clay mold kit I bought. It is for paper clay, which is light and foamy like model magic but I decided to use it with fondant to make cake toppers. ...
..which was probably for the best because I couldn't really read the insructions for the clay.
For fondant I just lightly greased the mold, pressed in the fondant, popped it out and then let it sit uncovered overnight to let it stiffen a bit before I assembled the pieces.
I had ignored the long rectangle shape and was just trying to twist some white fondant to make the "icing". It wasn't working and looked..wrong. Then I realized that the rectangle shape makes the perfect twist and that is obviously what it is there for.
Upon later inspection of the instructions I saw that there was even a little illustration showing me how to do this.. doh.
The kit came with a sparkle gel that I'm sure is not supposed to be used on food.. so I brushed my mini macrons with edible shimmer powder.
This one is my favorite! These were so fun to make, I am thinking about making them with the clay stuff at some point and sticking them on a necklace.
The kit even came with this little display case,Ii'm amused by the sign that says "Fuwafuawa mousse".. it makes me want to order more stuff from Japan right now.
With cake toppers this cute I knew that the cake itself had to be pink. I might as well bring the cutesy thing to its highest level.
I used the strawberry cake recipe from the Strawberry Cupcakes I made recently and the same cream cheese icing.
After a crumb coat of cream cheese icing I covered the cake in white marshmallow fondant..
..And then decorated it with the little fondant toppers.
Here's a teacup for scale. It's a very small cake.. perfect for two hungry people or for three people who ate too much for dinner.
..and so tasty! This strawberry cake really is my favorite cake recipe at the moment. And it doesn't hurt that its really adorable looking.
EEEEEeeeee, they are so cute and absolutely tiny!

I actually wouldn't recommend the site that I used for this kit.. shipping was super slow. But a good etsy seller has a bunch of them here : http://www.etsy.com/shop/beautifulwork?section_id=5611747
