This is the way that my mom usually serves berries: fresh, with a dollop of tangy sour cream and sweet brown sugar.
The sweetened sour cream pairs perfectly with the berries and you don't need to whip it up like you would for whipped cream. It's just as convenient as putting some cool whip on.. except it tastes waaay better and you don't have to pretend that you aren't eating an "edible oil product".
More often than not we just have a bowl of strawberries topped with the brown sugar and sour cream.
Mmmm.. summer strawberries. They actually taste like strawberries unlike the big, bland, tasteless ones for sale throughout the early spring. We used to always go to the pick-your-own strawberry fields but this summer my parents got their strawberries from a farm through CSA (community supported agriculture) where they get a basket of produce each week from the farm after buying a "share" at the beginning of summer.
It doesn't have to be just strawberries.. pretty much any berry works. Getting all fancy with some blueberries...
This isn't really a recipe (use whatever berries you have).. its more of a delicious suggestion.
Organic full-fat sour cream is the absolute best for this dessert. However, if you only have a low fat or other kind of sour cream on hand it will still be delicious, just not as thick and creamy as it could be.
..top generously with brown sugar..
Then start stirring it in so that the brown sugar melts into the sour cream and mixes all together.
Easiest dessert ever!

I used to serve berries this way all the time, and kind of forgot about it--thanks for the reminder! I recently got some beautiful berries from the Farmers' Market, and my city-raised daughter said I should have bought Driscoll's berries from the supermarket because my lovely little red berries tasted weird.

Never done that with berries, but I remember putting sour cream and brown sugar on crepes, and then rolling them up and eating like 40 million of them.

That last picture with the brown sugar just melting into the sour cream makes me so, so hungry. What a delicious idea!

I've never tried sour cream on berries (just about on everything else though). I usually serve strawberries with a dusting of icing sugar or dipped in chocolate and allowed to set. Would love to try this new way though.

I think I managed to not hit post on my last comment ... sorry if this is a repeat! But I had to say thanks, this is a lovely memory for me, we had this treat all the time growing up. But you've got me curious about your pinterest popcorn board, I couldn't find you, are you under clockwork lemon?!

If you think that turned out well, you should really try to source some creme fraiche instead of sour cream. It would take it to an even higher level!

Will this kind of Valentine's Day message reach the one you love? Well, just make sure he or she reads the newspaper.
